CERAMIC TILES OF ITALY. METAMORFOSI
From 12th to 17th April, on the occasion of “I Saloni 2011” Casalgrande Padana, in the magnificent setting of Triennale di Milano, participates in the collective exhibition entitled: “Ceramic Tiles of Italy. Metamorfosi”.
The event stresses the great attention that the Italian ceramic tile industry has always paid to all aspects related to environmental sustainability, focussing on Italian design and its ability to turn products not only into creative and original but also environmentally friendly projects.
Among the installations, “2x2x2 sulle vie del Sud”, produced by Casalgrande Padana according to a project by Tam associati, deals with the sustainability theme.
“Trade fair and exhibitions are per se ephemeral events coming to an end in a short time and producing large amounts of waste and objects that cannot be reused.
>2x2x2 sulle vie del Sud is meant to escape from that vicious cycle and propose a socially useful and environmentally friendly action. At the end of the exhibition, the Bios antibacterial ceramics® ceramic pallets used in the installation will be donated to completed the Goderich Emergency Hospital in Sierra Leone. By turning an ephemeral action into a socially useful initiative, the need is confirmed for rethinking the future in terms of sobriety and equity, so that knowledge and affluence may become a shared heritage for the whole planet.”
The project is based on the use of a very innovative product: Bios antibacterial ceramics®, a full-body vitrified porcelain stoneware developed through a research project carried out by Casalgrande Padana in cooperation with the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Department of Biomedical Science. As opposed to other products finished with a superficial coating, which are no match to it when it comes to anti-bacterial performance and persistence, Bios is the result of an innovative production process. The bactericide action induced by this specific treatment remains unchanged in time and, in contrast with other active principles, does not need light to activate and in the presence of humidity (traditionally a breeding ground for bacterial flora to develop), its beneficial properties are further enhanced. After enduring a number of very strict lab tests the product, a patented brand new solution, proved to be highly effective, since it is capable of removing 99.9% of the four main bacteria strains: Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcusfaecalis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
