POOL BORDERS

Introduction

Pools are highly technical and performance structures that require extremely accurate design planning and site execution to achieve a perfect final result. Following is a summary range of different types of pool borders equipped with fittings and accessories, although Casalgrande Padana’s Swimming Pool division is available to develop alternative and customized solutions.

Finnish System

The Finnish pool border is an overflow system with continuous water collection and a channel to bring water to the re-circulation system. This type of pool border may be designed with traditional fittings that imply a suitably shaped concrete screed to be installed. The lower cost of the fittings is however, generally offset by additional costs for preparing, concrete, waterproofing and for installation of fittings. Conversely, the exclusive Trim- Box fittings account for a much easier and quick solution, as they all feature the same thickness and are perfectly modular. As such they allow simpler concrete structures and make easier the installation of fittings even with thin-bed system.

TRADITIONAL PIECES

The "traditional" proposals are based on the use of fittings that generally need a shaped concreting because the thickness of the pieces is frequently different. In this case the advantage of the fittings cheaper prices is balanced by the more expensive costs due to the necessity of properly shaping the concrete, so as to both create waterproofing and install fittings.

TRIMBOX

More technical and complete solutions are achievable with the use of the fittings belonging to the Trim-Box system which offer, for the Finnish pool border type, a constant thickness and a perfect modularity of all the pieces. Concreting and waterproofing are made easier by the simple and linear shapes of the pool structure which has no cavities and/or no protrusions. All Trim-Box pieces made for this type of pool border, either in front of or at the back of the grating, incorporate a ceramic grating support. This provides a ceramic "bed" for the grating which runs along the pool border and grants both hygiene and easy cleaning. The scum channel and consequently also the grating, can thus be placed behind any of these pieces. Some pieces can create a rounded step in order to prevent water from washing the pool deck.

WIESBADEN SYSTEMS

The Wiesbaden high-level system is usually used for indoor pools where, for reasons of space, a reduction of the total width of the pool border is required. For this kind of pool borders it is possible to use monolithic ceramic channels “narrow”  or “wide”.

The Trim-Box solution, in turn, is definitely more interesting and flexible, since it allows any width of the channel, a sloping side to reduce the noise of water and use pieces of different colours.

The Wiesbaden low-level system, leaves the upper wall of the pool border completely free and do not require any particular fitting. This is a old-fashioned system almost exclusively used for specific pools such as therapeutic or slideequipped pools.

TRADITIONAL PIECES

Wiesbaden pool border – low level

The "traditional" proposals are based on the use of fittings that generally need a shaped concreting because the thickness of the pieces is frequently different. In this case the advantage of the fittings cheaper prices is balanced by the more expensive costs due to the necessity of properly shaping the concrete, so as to both create waterproofing and install fittings.

Wiesbaden pool border – high level

The fittings dedicated to this type of border afford basically the same advantages of the concept of the low-level system. In this case the monolithic scum channel, being located on the pool deck, must be covered with a grating to prevent accidents. The traditional scum channel is therefore provided with the necessary grating support (item 6600).

TRIMBOX

Wiesbaden pool border – low level

hanks to the special piece of the Trim-Box system it is possible to have a scum channel which is completely independent of the pool edge. This innovative concept allows the scum channel to have any shape and dimension thus enabling the designer to reduce the number of water outlets and the related costs.
The Trim-Box piece dedicated to this type of border (item 6800) has a sloping side with the aim of reducing the noise of falling water and is engraved to host wall tiles for the pool tank. Both the bottom of the scum channel and its back side can then be tiled using ordinary tiles. This simplifies the positioning of the water outlets which can have any section

The Trim-Box piece (item 6800), as it already incorporates the grating support, remains unchanged.
Taking into consideration the present trend aimed at treating as much water as possible through overflow, it is important to point out that the new concept of independent scum channel brings again to the foreground this type of pool border even for large public pools. The low draining capacity of the monolithic scum channels and the high costs due to the increase in the number of water outlets have so far limited the use of this type of border.
It is important to notice that a Wiesbaden high-level border allows remarkable savings of space on the pool deck and it is therefore particularly suitable for indoor pools where space is often a critical factor

SAINT MORITZ SYSTEM

The St. Moritz system is mainly used for therapeutic pools or when, due to technical requirements, a part of the pool must remain above ground level. Its functionality is also perfect to fashion suggestive effects in leisure and recreational pools. The channel underneath the overflow can be made both with traditional fittings or Trim-Box system pieces.

TRADITIONAL PIECES

The traditional solution for tiling the shape of such a pool border generally consists of normal ceramic tile listellos installed around the rounded concrete. This however involves both extra efforts and time for the positioning and installation of small ceramic tiles especially in case of irregularly shaped pools and for creating related stop-ends

TRIMBOX

The technical solution consists of the exclusive half-round ceramic piece and its related stop-end belonging to the exclusive Trim-Box system.
These special pieces enable a more precise and elegant overflow and are easier to install.
The scum channel can then be made with both Trim-Box pieces or traditional pieces.

ZURICH SYSTEM

The design of the Zurich pool border is similar to the Wiesbaden high-level system, from which it is different in terms of distance between the channel and the overflow fitting.

The overflow fitting, which serves as grip for the users, is made with Trim-Box while the connection with the channel can be made with normal tiles or other Trim-Box fittings also incorporating the support support for grating.

TRADITIONAL PIECES

Considering the same edge piece (item 6050), the traditional solution is made of normal tiles together with the Pvc profile so as to create the necessary grating support.

Alternatively, a more technical solution is made of Trim-Box pieces that incorporate the ceramic grating support

PRIVATE POOLS SYSTEMS

In private pools water is generally recovered through skimmers located on one or more tank-walls. This means that the water level is positioned at approx 10/20 cm under the pool deck and the concept of the pool border has to be different from those recovering water by overflow. The main technical feature that borders of pools recovering water through skimmers have to perform is to avoid that any water enters into the pool tank from the pool deck.

POOL NOSE

For pools recovering water through skimmers the proposals of Swimming Pool consist, on one side, of the new item named "Margella" (item 9600) made of porcelain stoneware both glazed and unglazed that allows the cladding of pool tank with ceramic tiles, mosaic and liners and, on the other side, of the Trim-Box piece (item 6050) which is very effective from a practical point of view:

TRIMBOX

In case protruding elements around the pool are not desired, there is the possibility to create a nose prolonged towards the pool tank with another Trim-Box piece (item 6550) where it is also possible, in case of need, to locate a profile that anchors either a plastic liner or any other types of non-ceramic coverings.
